Bernát Iván: Ozaena. A manifestation of iron deficiency (Budapest, 1965)

OZAENA A MANIFESTATION OF IRON DEFICIENCY by IVAN BERNÁT On the basis of a series of clinical examinations and animal experiments the author proves that ozaena, the pathogenesis of which has not been clarified as yet, is not a local disease, but one affecting the whole organism and showing symptoms of iron deficiency. Haematological and biochemical tests support this theory. The author succeeded in producing the cranial shape and pathological and histological alterations characteristic of ozaena by inducing iron deficiency in animals. Subsequent therapeutic experiments have also proved that ozaena reacts well to iron preparations, and iron therapy yielded excellent results in the overwhelming majority of cases. The nature of neuroendocrine-functional disturbances in ozaena are dealt with in detail, as well as the origin of ossification disturbances; the causes of the specific manifestations of this disease are also discussed.
