MATTHIAS VEHE-GLIRIUS ROBERT DÁN The Pfalz-born Matthias Vehe-Glirius was the theoretician of “Judaization”, which may be considered as Protestantism’s last independent theological concept at the end of the 16th cen­tury. His name and pseudonyms (Vehe, Glirius, Elianus, Schimberg, etc.) appeared in various publications, official documents and private let­ters. The information we have concerning his life is only fragmentary and for 400 years our only knowledge of his magnum opus, Mattanjah, was derived from the disparaging critiques of his enemies. In 1975, Professor Dán discovered in Utrecht this work long considered to be lost. On the basis of this work he researched and systematized the available information on Vehe- Glirius. As a result of his painstaking investiga­tion, we now see the Heidelberg student, per­secuted for his principles, who had spread his tenets combining within a bold new approach the Jewish and Christian faiths, either in person or via his followers, from the Netherlands to Tran­sylvania, from Lithuania to Friesland.
