Dezső L. - Hajdu P. (szerk.): Theoretical problems of typology and the Northern Eurasian languages. Szeged, 28-30 Aug. 1968 (Budapest, 1970)

Preface

PREFACE This volume contains the papers of a symposium organized by the Department of Linguistic and Literary Sciences, Hungarian Academy of Sciences, in collaboration with the Chair of Uralic Studies, József Attila University, from 28 to 30 August, 1968 in the South-Hungarian city Szeged. The aim of the symposium was to survey the theoretical problems, methods and applications of language typology and to promote the development of this discipline which has great traditions to look back upon but seems very young in its present shape. The minutes of the symposium are fully reported on in the closing presidential address by L. Tamás. The studies are published in the language in which they were read at the symposium, except for the Russian papers which have been translated into English. The papers were grouped into two main parts for the publication, therefore the order of sequence they were presented in could not be observed. Part One contains papers on the theory of linguistic typology, while Part Two on topics of areal-typological linguistics. We regret that we are not able to publish the lively and fruitful discussions which followed each paper, but the results of the round-table discussions have been partially incorporated into the texts of the papers. Unfortunately, R. Austerlitz’s contribution could not be included in the present book because of the author’s illness. We dedicate this volume to the memory of our late colleague Givi Iraklievich Machavariani who died in Szeged on the eve of the symposium. The Editors 7
