MIDDLE TURKIC GLOSSES OF THE RYLANDS INTERLINEAR KORAN TRANSLATION By JÁNOS ECKMANN 1 ’ II AKADÉMIAI KIADÓ, BUDAPEST 1 MIDDLE TURKIC GLOSSES OF THE RYLANDS INTERLINEAR KORAN translation by JÁNOS ECKMANN (BIBLIOTHECA ORIENTALIS HÜNGARICA, VOL. XXI) The sporadic monuments of Islamic Turkic literature dating from the 11th 13th centuries are of great value to researchers of the history of Turkic languages. Koran translations constitute a peculiar group among t hese literary remains. The monumental manuscript owned by the Rylands Library in Manchester is of special importance as it displays the literary language of the Karakhnid period. The present volume, the posthumous work of the noted scholar, János Eckmann, is a glossary of the valuable Koran translation. The Koran permits the collation of the Turkish text with the Arabic original, .and this greatly facilitates its linguistic evaluation. The Glossary contains examples showing the shades of meaning and usage of the words. Besides the English translation of the Turkic words, the Arabic and Persian equivalents are also given. An essay of the author on Middle Turkic Koran translations completes this important reference hook. в® AKADÉMIAI KIADÓ PUBLISHING HOUSE OF THE HUNGARIAN ACADEMY OF SCIENCES BUDAPEST ISBN 963 05 0984 9
