About the Authors

About the Authors Róbert Halmosi, MD, PhD was born in Mór, Hungary in 1972. After secondary school he was admitted to the University Medical School of Pécs in 1991. He graduated in 1997. During his university years he was a member of the Students’ Research Society in the field of Internal Medicine. He examined the in vivo effect of cardiovascular drugs (calcium channel blockers, nitrates and lipid-lowering agents) both on free radical-associated parameters and on hemorheological factors. Between 1997 and 2000 he worked at the First Department of Medicine, University Medical School of Pécs as a PhD student. His tutor was Professor Kálmán Tóth. In a joint study with the Department of Biochemistry and Institute of Organic and Medicinal Chemistry he measured the cardioprotective effects of antioxidants and PARP inhibitors in isolated rat heart model. Since 2001 he has been working at the 1st Department of Medicine as a resident in internal medicine. He defended his PhD thesis at the Medical School, University of Pécs, Hungary in 2002. Balázs Sümegi, MS, PhD, DSci was born in Báta, Hungary, 1952. He graduated in chemistry at the József Attila University of Szeged, Hungary in 1975. He defended his PhD thesis at the University Medical School of Pécs, Hungary in 1978 and his DSci thesis at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Budapest, Hungary in 1990. Between 1975 and 1978 he was a biochemist at the Department of Biochemistry, University Medical School of Pécs, Hungary. At the same place he was a Postdoctoral Fellow from 1978 to 1980, and Assistant Professor between 1980 and 1992. Between 1983 and 1986 he was a visiting sci­entist at the University of Texas Health Science Center, Department of Biochemistry, Dallas, Texas, USA. Between 1986 and 1987 he was a Research Chemist at the Pre-Clinical Science Unit, Veterans Administration Medical Center, Dallas, Texas, USA. From 1989 to 1991 he was a Visiting Professor at the University of Texas at Dallas, Department of Chemistry, Richardson, USA. Between 1992 and 1994 he was an Associate Professor at the Department of Biochemistry, University Medical School of Pécs, Hungary. Since 1994 he has been Full Professor and Chairman at the Department of Biochemistry, University Medical School of Pécs, Hungary. Between 1996 and 1999 he was the Dean of the Medical School of Pécs, Hungary. 79
