Hypothalamic control of the anterior pituitary. An experimental-morphological study (Budapest, 1968)
J. SZENTÁGOTHAI, В. FLERKÓ, В. MESS and В. HALÁSZ HYPOTHALAMIC CONTROL OF THE ANTERIOR PITUITARY The third edition of this Monograph — after a first edition in English in 1963 and a second edition with only minor changes in Russian in 1965 — now appears again in English with considerable revisions, including several entirely new chapters and some others completely re-written. The Monograph gives a detailed anatomical and histological analysis of the hypothalamo-hypophyseal complex, with due regard to the interests of the experimenter (stereotaxic atlas, Golgi architecture, synaptology, hypothalamic pathways, blood circulation and innervation of the pituitary gland). An extensive experimental material concerning hypothalamic control of thyrotrophic, adrenocorticotrophic, gonadotrophic and — newly added in this edition — of somatotrophic functions is presented. A new Chapter (III) deals with the specific — and to some extent autonomous — role of a certain limited region of the hypothalamus (hypophysiotrophic area) in the maintenance of structure and functions of the anterior pituitary gland. The Monograph is of specific interest for the experimental and clinical endocrinologist. Owing to the daring and provocative raising of new concepts, such as direct internal feedback mechanisms and purely nervous feedback loops involved, and several rather unusual histological and experimental modes of approach, the volume is a stimulating reading for everybody interested in experimental medicine and biology.
