Proceedings of the 3rd Budapest Conference on Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering October 15 — 18, 1968 Edited by Ä. Kezdi The volumes of the Proceedings of the 3rd Budapest Conference on Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering contain the full material of the Conference, the first three parts of which are published also in the columns of Acta Technica Academiae Scientiarum Hungaricae”. The topics presented at the Conference are the following: the physical characteristics of soils (37 papers), bracing and dewatering of foundation pits (10 papers), and design problems of deep foundation (22 papers). Studies on rock mechanics (22 papers) have been published in a mineographed separate volume. The subject matter of the published studies is by its very nature quite varied. Most of the papers of the first section belong to the sphere of soil physics. These aim to describe and characterize the behaviour of soils by means of the general laws of physics of granular media. The studies on deep foundations are concerned with the determination of reliable bearing capacity and introduction of new technologies. Papers have been received from 16 countries reflecting the widespread interest in this branch of science and also development in Hungary.
