Kiss Attila: Avar cemeteries in county Baranya - Cemeteries of the Avar period (567-829) in Hungary 2. (Budapest, 1977)

Introduction

BOLY-JÓZSEF ATTILA UTCA 6 According to the records written by J. Dorabay on June 26, 1940, the collection of the public school at Boly included finds coming from a grave unearthed in the Tokaj utca in a foundationtrench of the house belonging to Adam Gut. “The assemblage consists of two circular breast-clasps set with glass, two bracelets and a fragmentary spindle-whorl.” Since that time the finds have been lost. In 1969, however, on the basis of an information obtained from József Gut (the son of Adám Gut) at Boly, we managed to locate the site; it is the plot of ground belonging to József Attila utca 6 (former Apponyi utca; Figs 7-8). The finds were found when digging the foundations of the house in 1928; three skeletons were unearthed, beside one of them lay a “sword” and in another grave there was also a horse skeleton. The descriptions of the finds permit us to infer that here were some graves of a cemetery of the Late Avar Period. Fig. 7. Bóly.
