Lakó György: Proto Finno-Ugric sources of the Hungarian phonetic stock (Budapest, 1968)

OY. LAKÓ PROTO FINNO-UGRIC SOURCES OF THE HUNGARIAN PHONETIC STOCK The author expounds the theory of Finno-Ugric relationship of languages, elucidates the degrees of affinity between the individual Finno-Ugric languages and explains the reasons why Hungarian today is different from the tongues related to it. By way of introduction, he discusses the relationship of Finno-Ugric comparative phonetics with Hungarian historical phonetics, and pointing out the special tasks of Finno-Ugric comparative phonetics, he gives information about the material and sources of the comparative studies. The main part of the book is devoted to the discussion of the Proto Finno-Ugric phonetic stock; derivatives existing in Hungarian and the other Finno-Ugric languages are introduced in a great abundance. The work may be of interest to all experts of comparative linguistics, though it is primarily intended to meet the requirements of university students dealing with Finno-Ugric (Uralic) linguistics. The book has been written in a style well understandable even without more profound knowledge of phonetics, and it will certainly satisfy the demands of the general reading public as well.
