MAHUNKA The national parks of Hungary are important natural reserves not only for the country itself but also for the whole of Europe. These territories sustain an almost entire original flora and fauna comprising a significant part of the gene bank of Hungary. The exploration and subsequent protection of these values are the tasks primarily of the staff of the Hungarian Natural History Museum. The Hungarian research workers, with an international team of collaborators, have completed a thorough floristical and faunistical exploration of the territory of Hortobágy, the first national park in Hungary. This second volume partly complements the material of the animal groups treated in the first one. The elaborated material served as basis for extensive quantitative and qualitative examinations in order to better know the distribution of the species and the community conditions prevailing there. This created a possibility for further aut- and synecological, population dynamic and production biological research. The zoological investigations brought to light numerous species new to science and many species new to the fauna of Hungary. These data and other research results are of paramount importance in the knowledge and evaluation of the faunal genesis of the Carpathian Basin. AKADÉMIAI KIADÓ BUDAPEST
