Pölöskei Ferenc: Hungary after two revolutions 1919-1922 - Studia historica Academiae Scientiarum Hungaricae 132. (Budapest, 1980)

Ferenc Pölöskei HUNGARY AFTER TWO REVOLUTIONS (1919 1922) Ferenc Pölöskei’s book is the first to give a comprehensive account of the political situation in Hungary after the dissolution of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy and the revolutions of 1918 —1919.It traces the development of Hungary’s legal, parliamentary and governmental system, the treatment of human rights and the role of the army in these first years of counter-revolution. It acquaints the reader with the beginnings of the political career of Miklós Horthy and István Bethlen, the two leading politicians of the post-revolutionary period, and shows how the alliance between them developed. Horthy’s efforts to organize the new army are described together with his manoeuvres by which he eventually became Regent of Hungary. Bethlen’s activities are analysed in connection with the political and economic consolidation. Portraits are drawn of other leading politicians, such as Pál Teleki, Gyula Gömbös, István Szabó of Nagyatád, etc. Pölöskei’s sensitive treatment of the period will provide the reader with new insights into this chapter of Hungarian history.
