Rahman, Mushtaqur: Agriculture in Pakistan - Geography of world agriculture 13. (Budapest, 1988)

M. RAHMAN AGRICULTURE IN PAKISTAN The book presents the struggle of the big and heavily populated (86 million inhabitants in 1981) country for food self-sufficiency. One of the author’s main approaches is to put agricultural problems in the context of integrated rural development. In Pakistan, a number of rural development models have been tried so far. These models, which were designed in developed industrial countries, did not readily fit in with the societal realities of the country and only limited results were attained. Although the growth rate of gross agricultural output was relatively high in the last couple of years, rural poverty rooted in backward social conditions is still widespread in Pakistan. Another focus of interest of the author is the physical and social conditions of irrigation which represent the key technical precondition for agricultural growth. The book also gives a comprehensive overview of the main crops and agricultural regions of Pakistan. AKADÉMIAI KIADÓ • BUDAPEST
