SOIL BIOLOGY AND CONSERVATION OF THE BIOSPHERE Fdited bv J. SZEGI This volume contains the papers presented at the Vllth Meeting on Soil Biology, held at Keszthely University of Agriculture. The meeting was organized by the Soil Biology Section of the Hungarian Society for Soil Science of the Hungarian Association of Agricultural Sciences under the auspices of the Keszthely University of Agriculture. The papers presented here were written by experts of 15 countries. The 54 papers — devoted to the most recent results on ecological problems of soil biology — are distributed into six chapters: 1. Interaction between chemicals introduced in the agriculture and soil organisms, 2. The role of soil micro-organisms in the transformation of plant nutrients, 3. Interaction between nodule bacteria and leguminous plants, 4. The role of soil organisms in the decomposition of plant residues, 5. Soil organisms as components of the soil ecosystem, and 6. The role of soil micro-organisms in the soil-forming processes. From this list it is obvious that the papers dealing with important fields of soil biology are closely related to agricultural ecology and soil fertility. We hope that this volume will be useful not only for soil scientists, persons interested in plant nutrition or chemical protection of plants, but it will also help in education at university level.
