NATURAL HISTORY OF THE NATIONAL PARKS OF HUNGARY EDITOR-IN-CHIEF: Z. KASZAB The national parks of Hungary are important nature reserves which are also of international interest. They sustain an almost entirely original flora and fauna comprising a significant part of the gene bank of Hungary. The exploration and protection of these values are the task primarily of the staff of the Hungarian Natural History Museum. Hungarian research workers, in cooperation with an international team of collaborators, have now completed the floristical and faunistical exploration of the territory of Hortobágy, the first national park in Hungary. The results of this huge work are published in three volumes. The first two treat the fauna, while this third volume, edited by J. Szujkó-Lacza, the flora of the Hortobágy National Park. Today it is one of the most important functions of biological sciences to contribute to food production, to investigate and analyze the effects of human activity on the biosphere and to enumerate the continuously dwindling stock of the species that form the gene bank of the earth.
