Vályi László: Atom and ion sources (Budapest, 1977)

ATOM AND ION SOURCES by L. VÁLYI Atom and ion beams are becoming ever more extensively applied in various fields of science and technology. The atom source has become an important tool not only in atom physics, nuclear physics, solid state physics, chemical reaction kinetics, and thermonuclear research but also in technological fields such as high temperature chemical processes, semiconductor doping, etc. Ion sources, at first applied for mass spectroscopy, nuclear physics, elementary particle physics and medical research, have already been introduced into therapy, mass separation, ion implantation, and rocket techniques, apart from their having found uses in various industrial fields. This great variety of possible applications calls for the availability of a comprehensive up-to-date monograph on atom and ion sources. The publication of this book is therefore most timely. In this monograph both the theoretical and practical problems concerning the use of particle sources are discussed in detail. All the available knowledge in this field is reviewed and further developed. The large number of illustrations is of great practical help in the understanding and utilization of the discussed material. The compilation of the information has been made in such a manner as to assist the researcher and engineer engaged in the application or study and development of atom and ion sources in the understanding of the physical processes taking place in the particle sources and in the development and parameter adjustment of the source type suitable for a given task.
