Vargha Géza: Pulmonary function tests and their clinical application (Budapest, 1968)
G. VARGA and J. KOVÁTS PULMONARY FUNCTION TESTS AND THEIR CLINICAL APPLICATION The last decades have seen the enormous development of pulmonary function tests. Their application spreading to every branch of medical science — from internal medicine, general surgery, traumatology, paediatry, sports medicine to industrial preventive medicine — has greatly aided the general practitioner. Information obtained from these tests has led to the solution of numerous aeronautical, space, and deep-sea problems. More than ten years’ experience by the authors has been used and a huge literature included. All this enables those interested in this field to make a quick survey on pulmonary function test and on all the important questions arising in practice. In the first part an outline is given on the physiology and pathological physiology of respiration. This is followed in the second part by description of the tests of respiratory function from simple spirography to radio isotope techniques. The third part deals with the various practical applications, e.g. in establishing indications for surgery or screening tests of the population.
