Vígh József: Causality, determinism and prognosis in criminology (Budapest, 1986)

József Migh C4USM.ITY, DETER/HINISfK >4ND PROGNOSIS IN CRIAIINOLOGY Professor Vigh studies the problem of crime and criminality from more than one aspect. As a social scientist, he is trying to work out a theory of antisocial conduct as it is determined by a whole chain of causes. When he is looking at the problem from an environmentalistic and sociological viewpoint he stresses the environmental factors of crime, broken homes, disturbed families, poverty, poor education, and lists as causes of deliquency the deviations in health, and intelligence. After having assessed the cost of crime to society, to criminals and victims, in terms of money and personal unhappiness, Professor Vigh, as a lawyer, proposes some ways of practical application of the theories discussed, for the purpose of rehabilitation, e.g. using criminological prognosis and a flexible penal system. Professor Vigh has written a monograph which is not exactly a textbook on criminology. It is not a technical book either, to be read only by experts in criminology or criminal law. Just because criminology borders on so many different branches of science that no person can be an all-round expert, this book is intended for the people professionally interested in crime prevention, like lawyers, psychologists, sociologists and teachers. Professor József Vigh is Head of Department of Criminology at the Eötvös Loránd University, Faculty of Law, Budapest. He is the author of several publications.
