MATTHIAS CORVINUS AND THE HUMANISM IN CENTRAL EUROPE A highly successful international Conference has been organized with the title “Matthias Corvinus and the Humanism in Central Europe” on the occasion of the 500th anniversary of thè death of King Matthias I at his burial place, Székesfehérvár, between 14—17 May 1990. Participants had the opportunity to attend some 20 lectures by outstanding foreign and Hungárián experts of the period in English, French, German and Italian. The papers of the Székesfehérvár Conference hâve been published in volume 10 of the series “Studia Humanitatis” with an introductory study of Professor Jean-Claude Margolin, president of the International Association of Institutes for Renaissance Researches at thè head. The studies mainly deal with the connections between King Matthias I and the Contemporary European humanism or humanists. Some writings analyse the co-eval picture, having been established on the king in European and Hungárián public opinion, treat the humanism of the court of King Matthias I as an unique Central European phenomenon and appreciate the So­vereign of Hungary as the animator of humanism in Central Europe. This volume, entitled “Matthias Corvinus and the Humanism in Central Europe” is the first propagator of new scientific accomplishments concerning King Matthias I and his âge, has been published in world-wide languages.
