Ahogy utazásaink során megismerjük Európát, az emberben furcsa érzés támad. Szemléljük a régiektől megmaradt nagy gazdagságot épületben, ötvösremekekben vagy a művészet más ágában alkotott remekműveket, és sajnálkozunk: mi, magyarok milyen szegények is vagyunk. Tudjuk, ami tőlünk nyugatabbra megmaradt, és amit most kicsit irigykedve és gyönyörködve nézünk, az ott azért maradt meg, mert eleink vérüket ontva és értékeiket is feláldozva védték a Keletről jövő, mindig megújuló támadások elől Nyugatot. Ami ott megmaradt, az itt is megtalálható volt. Magyarország nem volt lemaradva, elmaradva nyugati szomszédaitól, Európa más országaitól. Sőt, sok tekintetben meg is előztük őket. Annak, hogy ott megmaradjon sok csodás alkotás, az ára az volt, hogy itt feltartóztattuk a támadásokat, és a harcokban a mi kincseink pusztultak el. Nagy ajándék Borbély Béla könyve. Fényképei bemutatják régi gazdagságunk nyomait, maradványait, melyekért nem kell szégyenkeznünk a földkerekség egyetlen népe előtt sem. A képeket nézve megsejthetjük, milyen is lehetett a régi Magyarország, mennyi szépség, gazdagság, milyen alkotó készség és mennyi tehetség jellemezte ezt a földet és ezt a népet. E könyv lapjairól áradjon a szívünkbe jogos büszkeség és jóleső érzés: nem akárkik utódai vagyunk. Büszkén lehet és kell Európában magyarnak lenni. És e lapokat nézve ébredjen bennünk felelősségtudat: őrizzük a megmaradt emlékeket, közös kincseinket. Felelősek vagyunk értük! Ezért áldozatot is kell hoznunk, ezt meg kell ismertetni gyermekeinkkel, ezeket tanítani kell az iskolákban. Csak így lehetünk méltó utódai eleinknek. Csak így tanulhatják meg a mai választ a sokszor feltett kérdésre az új meg új nemzedékek tagjai: „Mi a magyar?" Királyaink emléke nem letűnt korokat idéz, hanem kincseket, gazdagságot és alkotó tehetséget tár fel, ezzel minket is arra bátorítva, hogy merjük és tudjuk vállalni sorsunkat, gyökereinket, gazdagítsuk sajátos magyar világunk alkotásaival, sorsunk vállalásával népünket és az európai népek nagy családját, mint amint ezt tették eleink is. E könyv lapjairól áradjon lelkűnkbe erő, és fakadjon vállalt felelősség a múlt és a jelen világán át a jövőért. Gazdagítsuk, és ne szegényesük a világot! Spányi Antal székesfehérvári megyés püspök Előszó As during our journeys we learn more and more about Europe, our experiences may arouse strange feelings. We can see the richness of old times in buildings, works of art of goldsmiths or other masterpieces, and we feel sorry: how poor we, Hungarians, are. We know what has remained there, to the west of our country - and what we look at now a little enviously and admiringly -, has remained there because our ancestors - losing their blood and wealth - defended the West against the recurring attacks coming from the East. What has remained there, used to be found here as well. Hungary was not underdeveloped and did not lag behind its western neighbours or other countries of Europe. What is more, in many respects it was more advanced. The price of the survival of the many wonderful works of art was that the Hungarians stopped the attacks and thus our treasures decayed in the fights. Béla Borbély's book is a very special present. Its photos show the traces and records of our ancient wealth, we do not need to feel ashamed before any peoples of the world. Looking at the pictures we can divine what the old Hungary may have been like, how much beauty and wealth there were, what creativity and how much talent characterised this land and this people. Let this book engulf our hearts with rightful pride, self-respect and gratification: we are descendants of not just anybody. We can and must be proud of being Hungarian in Europe. And looking at these pages we should be aware of our responsibility: we must protect our relics, our common treasures. We all are responsible for them! We must make sacrifices for them, and we must acquaint our children with them, we must teach them at school. This is the only way to be worthy descendants of our ancestors. The members of the newer and newer generations can learn the answer to the many-times-asked question "What does it mean to be Hungarian" only this way. The memories of our kings does not evoke bygone ages but treasures, wealth and creative talent, thus encouraging us as well to take upon our fate, roots and enrich our people and the big family of European peoples with the works of our special Hungarian world as did our ancestors as well. May strength fill our souls and let us take responsibility for the future through the world of the past and present. Let us enrich and not impoverish the world!
